I had been at the U for two years studying vocal performance and speech communications. I loved singing and had a fun gig in a summer rock band, but decided I wanted to own a business. Maybe a watch shop on a tropical island.

My favorite store at the time was Casual Corner. I loved their products, their staff always seemed excited to be working there, and they had a fabulous direct mail program for their loyal customers. I wanted to own a business like theirs.

One day I got BOLD! and walked in and asked for the manager. I told her my dream was to own a business some day, a shop that was run like Casual Corner. I asked if I could be hired to help manage one of their stores. She smiled and said, *How about starting as a sales person first?*

I loved that job. I was the proudest salesperson around. Everyone who knew me heard how great Casual Corner was. Soon I was promoted to sales manager, the youngest manager in the company.

What I remember most about that initial conversation was this: she never asked me about my background or education. She didn't wonder whether I was right for the position. I learned later that she saw my sincere passion and wanted me on her team.
