Ask Ann BOLD Strategies For Success

Business Owner, Santa Fe, Asks Ann!

I'd like to expand my business by adding speaking services, but am not sure what would sell. What HOT topics do you suggest? Can you suggest popular themes that will get me booked?

Ann Answers:

The way I like to answer this $million dollar$ question is to liken HOT topics in speaking to HOT looks in fashion. You can always find the lists of what's hot and *to be seen in* when it comes to trends and of-the-moment fashion.

But can you pull that look off? Is it really YOU? Does it extend your own true brand/identity? When you put it on, is it the clothing that gets the attention? Or does it bring out YOUR best, and therefore you hear *you look fabulous*...rather than *what a great shirt*.

I know you didn't ask about fashion, we're getting there...

It's the same for speaking...you can always research the top ten list, the trend of the moment, the hot list of what's selling. Is Time Management in or out? What about Success? Or Communication? Is Change selling or is it Productivity?

The answer lies in YOU. The topic or theme that may launch you through the roof may not even appear on any hot or trend lists. Look inside to see what lights you up in a way that responds to a struggle in your target market. What is your bold point of view on that? They'll pay for your expertise and your ability to bring that message, when you connect in your own unique way, as no one else quite can.

To learn more, read YOU ARE THE MESSAGE, by Roger Ailes. Here's one of my favorite quotes on the subject by Henry David Thoreau:

"Don't ask yourself what the world needs.
Ask yourself what makes you come alive,
and go do that.
Because what the world needs
is people who come alive."

Ask Ann Creating Connections

Owner, Executive Search Firm, New York City, Asks Ann!

After three interviews, my candidate *Mary* has her fourth and final interview tomorrow. The employer has not extended an offer as there is a concern that, while Mary has the background and expertise needed in this position, she is coming across a bit too *packaged*. They aren't convinced she's the best match for this company or the best fit with the other staff, because they haven't been able to get a feel for what Mary is really about. How do you suggest I help Mary nail this last interview and land the offer?

Ann Answers:

An employment interview is NOT THE TIME TO LEAVE THEM GUESSING about who you are. In this case, the offer is a go! as far as Mary having the right background and expertise. It's time for her to step it up and leave no doubt that she'll be a great fit within their organization (that's only if she truly is...if not, this is not the job for her).

How? Help Mary review the company's website, annual report, and any other information that has been shared in the previous interviews. She needs to FIND A COMMONALITY...a mutual interest or goal she shares with this company. Not only find one, but present it in a genuine way to start a comfortable conversation, ALLOWING THEM TO GET TO KNOW something more about her. Mary needs to MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM TO SEE THE VALUE, by being prepared to SHARE a real example of how she's played this interest out in her own work or life. Commonalities are what connect people. But IT'S UP TO US TO CREATE THE CONNECTION!

(Follow-up: HeadHunter appreciated this advice, followed it, and the candidate landed the offer the next day...Go for the Bold!)

Ask Ann Work + Life

Business Student, Twin Cities, Asks Ann!

My Dad wants and expects me to take over his business one day. I work there now as a part-time job, but have absolutely no interest in taking over his business. I'm not sure what to do about it.

Ann Answers:

You are lucky to experience what many of us never will: working with our parents, getting a glimpse of their work day, and the chance to be learning the ropes of an established business while you're in a learning-curve stage of discovering what really interests you and where your gifts abound.

Continue to work with your Dad. And then take it a step further. BECOME THE BEST employee his company ever had. Be proud of your contribution as your Dad is surely proud of you.

And next is the tough part: When the day comes that you're getting to the point you know without a doubt that this business is not for you, you'll need to DIG UP YOUR BEST BOLD and invite your Dad to have a heart-to-heart talk. Tell him FROM YOUR GUT exactly how you feel and that, while you recognize the gift of his offer and the love he's reflecting in wanting it for you, it's simply not where your passions lie or where you're heading. BE PREPARED AND CONFIDENT in explaining to your Dad where you see yourself and how another opportunity will be a better fit. Then LISTEN UP. You just might learn something new.

Don't be surprised, as you continue to grow and develop who you and are what you're about...you just may end up CREATING AN OPPORTUNITY within your Dad's business that's a perfect fit for you.
